Most people don't identify as voracious readers. However, while shopping in stores and online, the average consumer reads thousands of words of marketing copy every week. Sadly, marketing copy is often the most overlooked aspect of advertising - the first place where mediocre companies get careless and great companies excel. As a copywriter and copyeditor, my role is to translate the technical and/or lifestyle advantages of your products or services in a way that consumers not only understand but desire. David Foster Wallace defined successful advertising as creating "an anxiety relievable by purchase." By negotiating vocabulary, syntax, and tone, my goal is to steer your customers' imagination toward a purchase they can be proud of.

"A writer," goes the famous quip by Thomas Mann, "is someone for whom writing is more difficult than it is for other people." Anyone who's written a book - or even an essay or short story - knows that it's almost impossible to go it alone. Thankfully, we have editors. To expand on Mann's thinking, I'd venture that an editor is someone for whom reading is more difficult than it is for other people. It's no coincidence, then, that editors make the best readers.

For writers who've completed a manuscript yet aren't ready to submit for publication, I offer a variety of editorial services. Whether through a line-by-line critique, an overall one-time evaluation, or an in-depth ongoing consultation, my goal is to bring writers outside of their perceptions and into the manuscript itself, ensuring that all its needs are met and that, in the end, you've created the strongest possible novel, essay, or story within your abilities. By keeping a strict eye on pacing, tone, character, syntax, vocabulary, plot developments, prose style, and overall structure - and, admittedly, by raising several difficult questions along the way - we'll work together to put your manuscript through a rigorous and thorough reading.

The revision process doesn't have to be dull or intimidating. With strong direction and the right questions, it can be as invigorating as the first time you sat down to write. For rates and terms, please don't hesitate to contact me.
